Due to this scorching hot summer, recently, pet owners have been extra cautious and concerned with their pet’s well-being. Since the heat already has the power to drain energy and potentially burn your pup’s paws during a walk, the last thing you’d want in your list is for them to feel under the weather. Pet owners usually rely on the “warm nose myth” as a reference to see if their dog has a fever (or otherwise sick) if the nose has a change in texture/color and is crusty and dry. Truth is, there could be several reasons:

1.) Sunburn Unfortunately, your furry pal, along with other species, are prone to solar dermatitis (sunburn) that can eventually lead to skin cancer on noses, ear tips, or even around the eyes. Those who have lighter pink shade coats are at more risk than others, so be sure to check with your local veterinarian about providing sun protection in case they are in this category..

2.) Contact Sensitivity Plastic dishes have the effect of causing allergies and sensitivity on your dog’s nose/muzzle area due to its dyes. Stainless steel bowls are a great alternative to solve this particular problem. Glass and ceramic are also acceptable, just be cautious of the potential breakage if not placed on a sturdy surface.

3.) Nasal Discharge If you notice your pup ever coughing, sneezing, having difficulty with breathing, and suffering from a runny nose, it is highly likely that it is connected to a respiratory infection. Worst case scenarios, it could also potentially be a nasal foreign body or a tumor in the nasal passages; so whichever the case may be, it’s best to consult with a vet for help before any other problems occur.
